A recent contemporary art auction at Philips Auctions saw a work in glass and mixed-media by American artist David Hammons in 2000 go up for auction with an estimate between $5 million and $7 million dollars. By the time the hammer fell, the price for this glass basketball backboard with black steel hoop and border adorned with tiers of lit crystal chandeliers had risen to $8,005,000, setting a new record for Hammons’ work (as well as most likely a new record for a single work in glass). According to www.blouinartinfo.com, the winning bidder was art dealer David Zwirner, with galleries in New York and London.
