Habatat Galleries is thrilled to announce the participation of acclaimed artist Christopher Day for March of Not Grandma’s Glass (NGG)  2024. Day, a mixed-race artist based in the UK, brings a unique perspective to the world of contemporary glass art through his thought-provoking exploration of identity and social issues.

In his practice, Day seamlessly blends the seductive qualities of glass with narratives that delve into complex inquiries and unflinching social vignettes. As a mixed-race individual navigating the intricacies of race in the UK, Day’s work reflects on what it means to exist between racial boundaries, grappling with the notion of not feeling “enough” of either identity.

His solo exhibition, ‘Blown, Bound and Bold’, showcases deeply personal self-portraits that confront the complexities of internalized racism and the struggle to establish an identity beyond linear definitions of race and heritage. Through captivating pieces that challenge stereotypes and confront societal norms, Day encourages viewers to engage in discussions about race, identity, and representation.

Despite a late start in his professional engagement with art, Day’s past experiences, including his background as a plumber, have imbued his work with a profound understanding of craftsmanship and materiality. Each glass-blown piece reflects an insistent questioning of history and a patient waiting for response, inviting viewers to confront uncomfortable truths and explore new perspectives.

Through his work, he challenges the limited representation of diverse narratives in art history and popular culture, advocating for greater inclusivity and understanding.

As part of the NGG 2024 event, Day’s participation promises to ignite conversations and provoke reflection on the intersection of art, identity, and social change. Join us as we celebrate his groundbreaking work and the transformative power of glass art in shaping our understanding of the world around us.
