Dedication This Morning for Sculpture at Libbey MonumentNew and Today!

  • A dedication ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 13, for a new glass and metal sculpture at the Libbey Monument in Historic Woodlawn Cemetery, Toledo
  • The artwork was designed by Toledo Museum of Art Glass Studio Production Manager Jeff Mack, with Jackie Ansera of Nil Gallagher Inc., a landscape design firm based in Berkey, Ohio
  • Input was provided by Julie McMaster, TMA database and archives manager, the Libbey Trust and Woodlawn Cemetery; the project was funded by the Libbey Trust, which oversees maintenance of the memorial site
  • The sculpture emulates a small reflecting pool with fountains, but what would normally be water is made with glass, a beautiful reference to the Libbey’s glass legacy
  • The “fountain heads” are in fact crystal domes made in the Glass Studio and later brilliant-cut with the same 32-point Hobstar pattern found on TMA’s Libbey punch bowl as well as other fine examples of Libbey brilliant-cut crystal from the time period
  • Cast glass pavers embedded within the monument have a reverse-side relief of ripples emitting outward from the glass dome fountainheads; this imagery represents the impact and lasting effect which the Libbeys had on the community, the arts and industry
  • The glass domes were cut by Aiden Scully at Crystal Traditions in Tiffin, Ohio; the glass castings were made in the TMA Glass Studio by Steve Cothern, assistant studio manager, working with artist Tim Stover; the metal fabrication was done by Dane Turpening at Toledo Twisted Iron; granite was provided by Toledo Monuments; Nil Gallagher Inc. did the installation
