  • The 44th Glass International – the largest exhibition of contemporary glass art in the world – continues through July 22 at Habatat Galleries in Royal Oak, Mich.

Trophy Made by Gathered on Cover of Peach WeekenderThis Morning!

  • A glass trophy made by the team at the Gathered Glassblowing Studio is featured on the cover of The Blade’s Peach Weekender today
  • Made with clear, cast glass, the trophies a made with classic shapes – rectangle, triangle and circles – assembled in a way that recalls the appearance of a classic film projector
  • Six of the trophies will be presented to winners of the 2016 Glass City Film Festival this weekend in Toledo www.glasscityfilmfestival.com
  • Kim Sanchez, festival coordinator, is quoted in an article in the Weekender as wanting to reflect the location of the event: “I think its’s also important to consider the symbolism in the name, Glass City Film Festival. We knew early on that we wanted to work with this studio and buying local is an example of how GCFF is making an economic impact.”

Art Loop This Month May 19Tonight!

  • The third Thursday Art Loop this month takes place today, May 19
  • Galleries downtown will be open from 5:30 to 9 p.m.
  • At Gathered Glassblowing Studio, Steve Cothern will be guest artist for the glassblowing demonstration; there will also be live music by Human Juicebox and local beer

Touch of Light in Ferndale Selling Equipment, BuildingNew!

  • After 32 years, John Fitzpatrick is selling his tools and equipment, and selling the building that houses his Touch of Light Studio & Gallerie in Ferndale, Mich.
  • Fitzpatrick studied and worked at glassblowing shops in Denmark and Sweden, including Orrefors and Kosta Boda; he returned home to suburban Detroit to open Touch of Light in 1984
  • In addition to making and selling his own glass creations, he taught classes since 1986

Ticketing For Demos and Glass Fashion Show at 2016 GAS ConferenceNew!

  • During the 2016 GAS conference in Corning, N.Y., special tickets will be required for all morning demos at The Corning Museum of Glass (CMoG)
  • In addition, a wristband will be required for admission to the Glass Fashion Show
  • Tickets and wristbands are free for conference registrants but must be picked up on site in a centralized ticketing area during certain times; they are available on a first-come, first-served basis; be prepared to present your conference badge and photo ID

  • Glassblowers are wanted for one of the Northwest’s premier glassblowing studios, Live Laugh Love Art; they are looking for leaders and assistant glass blowers
  • The studio has two Oregon locations – Sunriver and Tigard – with glassblowing limited to Tigard
  • With just over 6000 square feet of beautifully organized space and more than 15,000 people in classes and events last year, the studio needs help
  • They offer a wide variety of classes from glass blowing, glass fusing, painting, welding and a variety of torch working classes from beginner to expert; they currently operate six days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

  • SGS is a public access Hot Shop, open seven days a week, and offers private classes in various lengths, multi-day courses, and group events to the general public

Matt Paskiet Sculpture in Zanesville, Ohio ExhibitionNew!

  • A sculpture by Matt Paskiet of Firenation in Holland, Ohio, has been accepted into the Zanesville Museum of Art’s 72nd Ohio Annual Exhibition
  • Fire Opal Vessel was one of 55 works of art selected from a field of 363 entries

Matt Paskiet Sculpture in Colorado Exhibition

  • A sculpture by Matt Paskiet was also accepted into the WCA-CO (Women’s Caucus for Art Colorado) national juried show, State of Unions

  • Michelle Rial, a glass artist focusing primarily in fused and kiln-formed glass, has a solo exhibition at Glass Axis in Columbus http://www.glasstf.com/

  • The goal of the exhibition is to expand people’s thoughts about glass, from the table to the wall, and to give another perspective on glass and art

Appalachian Center for Craft looking for Resident in Glass

  • The Appalachian Center for Craft in Cookeville, Tenn., is looking for a Resident in Glass
  • The purpose of the Artist in Residence (AIR) program is to provide a creative, residential environment for emerging professional artists and to broaden student and faculty awareness of new approaches and techniques
  • The AIR  program is a one year appointment renewable for up to three years

Glass Art Exhibition at U of M-Dearborn

  • The current exhibition in the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery at the University of Michigan-Dearborn is A Collector’s Living Room: Honoring Richard and Louise Abrahams http://umdearborn.edu/berkowitz/
  • The exhibition opened in February and continues through June 15
  • Richard and Louise Abrahams purchased their first piece of glass after falling in love with the medium at the 1997 SOFA exhibition; for many years after, the Abrahams travelled the world and built an extraordinary, international studio glass collection
  • This exhibition highlights only a portion of the remarkable studio glass collection that has been gifted to the university by the Abrahams
  • The show is intended to honor their significant contribution and provide the viewer with a rare glimpse into the living room of a private collector
  • Sonja Blomdahl, Lucio Bubacco, Ben Edols, Kathy Elliott, Petr Hora, Janet Kelman, Harvey Littleton, Colin Reid, and Richard Ritter are just a few of the glass artists highlighted in the exhibition

Arts Commission, Toledo Symphony Collaborate for Hot Glass 2016

  • The Arts Commission and the Toledo Symphony will expand on The Arts Commission’s historically successful Hot Glass fundraising event with a series of events in September to October, culminating in a Hot Glass/Cool Music gala auction event tentatively set for 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20
  • With support from ProMedica, the Arts Commission and the Symphony will create a multi-day event, celebrating Toledo’s heritage as the Glass City, especially as the birthplace of the studio glass movement
  • The exhibition will open in mid-September and is free and open to the public; free guided tours for groups of 10 or more will be available

Contemporary Glass Exhibition at TMA

  • An exhibition of contemporary glass is on display now at the Toledo Museum of Art
  • Hot Spot: Contemporary Glass from Private Collections coincides with the 10th anniversary of TMA’s Glass Pavilion and continues through Sept. 18

Michigan Glass Project Set for July 22-24

  • The Michigan Glass Project will host its annual art party this year on July 22 through 24
  • The main event is a music and art festival with a focus on fundraising through the sale of artwork
  • The group is raising funds for Art Road, a Detroit nonprofit whose mission is to bring art classes back to Detroit Public Schools
  • In 2015, MGP wrote a $40,000 check to Art Road and the group can’t wait to top that amount this year
