Third Thursday April 21Tonight!

  • The third Thursday this month is today, April  21
  • Galleries downtown will be open from 5:30 to 9 p.m.
  • At Gathered Glassblowing Studio, Sten Neuber will be guest artist for the glassblowing demonstration; she will be assisted by Matt Paskiet; there will also be live music by Old State Line and local beer

Call for Artists: ProMedica Atrium Project – Deadline April 28New!

  • The Arts Commission and ProMedica Health Systems has convened a design review board to commission a large, hanging glass installation to be installed in a 4-story atrium in the new headquarters for ProMedica
  • The work will be a central feature to the building as a part of the additions and renovations to the new campus; the submission deadline is next Thursday, April 28

  • The Chrysler Museum Glass Studio is offering two special guest instructor classes this summer
  • Bullseye instructor Stacy Lynn Smith will explore a variety of methods for screen printing on kiln-fired glass; the fundamentals include image preparation, screen coating and exposing, printing with powders, and firing schedules
  • Other topics include multiple firings, textured prints, wafers, image registration and thick blocks
  • Classes are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, July 26-31
  • Wayne Strattman, one of the world’s leading artists in neon and plasma, will take students beyond conventional neon techniques
  • Using 19th century Geissler tubes as inspiration, students will work borosilicate glass, colored phosphors and metals into pieces that glow and react in novel ways
  • The class will also explore advanced glass processing techniques that enable pumping plasma into blown glass in a kiln

Benzaiten Center Seeks Full-Time Flame-Working Studio ManagerNew!

  • The Benzaiten Center for Creative Arts in Lake Worth, Fla., is looking for a full-time flame-working studio manager
  • The new 14,000-square-foot fine art fabrication facility already has an active hot shop for glass blowing, a slumping and fusing studio, and a gallery; now it wants to expand the operation to include a flame-working studio and fine arts metal foundry
  • The Center would like interested flame workers to contact them ASAP as they will be building the studio in the next couple of months and would greatly appreciate input in its design and equipment needs

Area Artists in Ohio Craft Museum Exhibition, ColumbusNew!

  • Adam Sanzenbacher and Matt Paskiet have glass sculptural work in the Best of 2016 exhibition at the Ohio Craft Museum in Columbus
  • Ohio Designer Craftsmen’s 33rd annual juried members’ exhibition showcases exemplary works in clay, glass, fiber, metal, wood and mixed media
  • Sanzenbacher’s kiln-cast glass and laminated birch plywood sculpture Soles Lost to Space (and) Time won the Ohio Designer Craftsmen Board of Trustees Emerging Craftsman Award
  • Paskiet’s blown glass entry is titled Azul Spiderweb Sculpture
  • Tom Muir, professor, area head, jewelry and metals at BGSU, has a copper, brass and FDM plastic print in the show titled Pig Snout Belt Buckle; the object won the Brian Lonsway Memorial Award for Humor in Craft

Exhibition Event at Michigan Hot Glass April 30

44th Glass International Opening Soon at Habatat Galleries

  • The 44th Glass International – the largest exhibition of contemporary glass art in the world – will open from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday, May 7 at Habatat Galleries in Royal Oak, Mich.

  • An exhibition of contemporary glass is on display now at the Toledo Museum of Art

BGSU Students Place Fourth in Glass Olympics

  • A team from Bowling Green State University finished fourth in the 2016 Glass Olympics held April 9 at The Ohio State University; a trophy the BGSU team made for the event placed first
  • Twelve glass students from BGSU competed with 11 other university teams in the one-day event; OSU won first place overall
  • Said BGSU student Kara O’Dea: “It’s a yearly event where we get to meet and hang out with other aspiring glass artists. A different school hosts each year. It’s a cool way for us to see how different programs are structured and it gets us out of our studio for a couple days, which is always good.”

Glass Studio Technician Opening at TMA

  • There is an opening at the Toledo Museum of Art for a Glass Studio Technician
  • The Glass Studio Technician is a front line position responsible for the smooth and effective implementation of Museum functions that occur in the Glass Studios
  • The core responsibilities deal with customer service, studio stewardship, basic maintenance, organization and preparedness for daily operations

Lino Tagliapietra at Hawk Galleries in May

  • The incomparable Lino Tagliapietra will have an exhibition at the Hawk Galleries in Columbus from May 7 through June 26
  • In conjunction with the exhibition, Tagliapietra will give a lecture at the Columbus Museum of Art at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 7

Michelle Rial Exhibition at Glass Axis

  • Michelle Rial, a glass artist focusing primarily in fused and kiln-formed glass, will have a solo exhibition at Glass Axis in Columbus http://www.glasstf.com/
  • Up Against the Wall! will open from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 13, in THE Kennedy Galleries and remain on display through June 25; Rial will give an artist talk at 7 p.m. during the opening
  • The goal of the exhibition is to expand people’s thoughts about glass, from the table to the wall, and to give another perspective on glass and art
  • Rial’s creations are inspired by nature, multi-layered and textural artworks containing both single- and multiple-panel compositions, incorporating a variety of glass elements

Michigan Glass Project Set for July 22-24

  • The Michigan Glass Project will host its annual art party this year on July 22 through 24
  • The main event is a music and art festival with a focus on fundraising through the sale of artwork
  • Raising funds for Art Road, a Detroit nonprofit whose mission is to bring art classes back to Detroit Public Schools
  • In 2015, MGP wrote a $40,000 check to Art Road and the group can’t wait to top that amount this year
