Michelle Rial Exhibition at Glass AxisNew!

  • Michelle Rial, a glass artist focusing primarily in fused and kiln-formed glass, will have a solo exhibition at Glass Axis in Columbus http://www.glasstf.com/
  • Up Against the Wall! will open from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 13, in THE Kennedy Galleries and remain on display through June 25; Rial will give an artist talk at 7 p.m. during the opening
  • The goal of the exhibition is to expand people’s thoughts about glass, from the table to the wall, and to give another perspective on glass and art
  • Rial’s creations are inspired by nature, multi-layered and textural artworks containing both single- and multiple-panel compositions, incorporating a variety of glass elements

  • The Glass Academy in Dearborn, Mich., is currently hiring glassblowers for year-round employment opportunities, along with a seasonal staff May thru Labor Day, this year including the summer glassblowing team at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio
  • The Academy is looking for individuals who enjoy working with people in a fun, engaging team environment, who they will train to conduct glassblowing demonstrations, make basic production items and assist visitors in making of simple glass items

Richard Marquis is Honorary Auction Chair in PittsburghNew!

  • Richard Marquis will be honorary chair for the Pittsburgh Glass Center’s Art on Fire Celebration and Auction this year
  • The 15th anniversary party will be on Friday, Sept. 23 at American Eagle Outfitters
  • Marquis is bringing two of his closest friends and conspirators to the party this year – Dante Marioni and Nick Mount – who assisted in the creation of the Granulare Duck on Boat sculpture that will be the featured item in the auction
  • Attendees you buy tickets by June 30 will be included in an exclusive group of glass art appreciators who are invited to a private preview party and demonstration with Marquis, Marioni and Mount

Celebrating The Studio at 20New!

  • In 1996, The Corning Museum of Glass opened The Studio as a place for artists and students to learn about glassmaking and practice their craft
  • During the past 20 years, The Studio has become an internationally renowned facility for glassmaking and a creative center for artists who work in glass
  • On May 26, The Studio will celebrate the many artists, teachers, students, residents and supporters who have helped to make The Studio one of the most renowned glassmaking schools in the world
  • All-day festivities include a block party and giant glass birthday cupcake demo by John Miller
  • An exhibition drawn from the Museum’s permanent collection will showcase work created by artists who have taught or who have been artists in residence at The Studio

Brien Strancar in Group of Nine at Hudson Gallery

  • Glass artwork by Brien Strancar will be included in the latest Group of Nine exhibition at the Hudson Gallery in Sylvania
  • The multimedia exhibition continues through the month of April and includes paintings, sculptures, ceramics and photography

Glass Sculpture Installed and Dedicated at ProMedica Facility

  • A new glass sculpture has been installed and dedicated at the ProMedica Health and Wellness Center at 5700 Monroe Street, Sylvania
  • The sculpture was produced by glass artists at the Toledo Museum of Art, including Kristine Rumman, Sten Neuber and Kacey McCreery

TMA Summer Classes Catalog Available Online

  • The catalog for summer classes at the Toledo Museum of Art is now available online at http://www.toledomuseum.org/learn/classes/; as usual, many exciting classes in glass are included
  • Among the highlights is a visiting artist workshop focused on coldwork and led by GAPP visiting artist Jiyong Lee, a studio artist and educator who lives and works in Carbondale, Ill.
  • Lee is associate professor of art at Southern Illinois University; he has headed the glass program there since 2005; born and raised in South Korea, he earned his MFA from the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York and taught there for several years
  • As a reminder, the Museum has a number of scholarship opportunities available for youth and adult students taking its classes
  • Scholarships cover the full registration fee for most classes; students submitting a scholarship application form require no other method of registration; only one scholarship form may be submitted per class but multiple forms may be submitted for multiple classes
  • Scholarship applications for Session 1 of the summer 2016 term must be received by Sunday, April 24

Call For Applicants: The Works Artist In Residence Program

  • The Works, an Ohio center for history, art and technology located in Newark, Ohio, is seeking applicants for its artist in residence program www.attheworks.org
  • There are two residencies available; each is 13 weeks in duration
    • Fall 2016: Sept. 19 through Dec. 17
    • Spring 2017: Jan. 31 through April 29
  • Submit a resume, two professional references and five digital images of recent work including blown glass objects to [email protected]  by April 29

Lino Tagliapietra at Hawk Galleries in May

  • The incomparable Lino Tagliapietra will have an exhibition at the Hawk Galleries in Columbus from May 7 through June 26
  • In conjunction with the exhibition, Tagliapietra will give a lecture at the Columbus Museum of Art at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 7
  • Following the talk at the Museum, Hawk Galleries will host a preview opening and artist’s reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 7

Culinary Arts Exhibition Continues at Hawk Galleries in Columbus

  • Emily Brock and John Miller are featured glass artists in the current exhibition at Hawk Galleries in Columbus that continues through April 24 http://hawkgalleries.com/
  • Titled Culinary Arts, the exhibition focuses on food and places where food is sold or consumed
  • The exhibition also includes paintings and bronze sculptures of food by the team of Luis Montoya and Leslie Oritz

Call to Artists: LUXUS Exhibition in Corning (Deadline: April 15)

  • LUXUS is an exhibition that will take place in more than 20 venues throughout the Gaffer District in Corning, N.Y. during the Glass Art Society conference, June 9 through 11
  • Interior spaces, such as empty stores and shop fronts, will be available for exhibition, as well as external spaces suitable for pop-up installations, performances and projections
  • Proposal are being accepted from artists working in any discipline who are using light as material; the deadline for proposals is April 15
  • Applications for site-specific installation, object-based work as well as video, performance and projection will be considered.

Enlightened Exhibition at Pittsburgh Glass Center

  • Pittsburgh Glass Center flips the switch on June 3 to present a new lighting exhibition called, “Turned On: Lighting Hooks Up with Sculpture,” co-curated by PGC Executive Director Heather McElwee and artist Susan Taylor Glasgow
  • The exhibition will be on view until Sept. 11

Contemporary Glass Exhibition at TMA Opens April 15

  • An exhibition of contemporary glass at the Toledo Museum of Art will open April 15 and continue through Sept. 4
  • Hot Spot: Contemporary Glass from Private Collections coincides with the 10th anniversary of TMA’s Glass Pavilion
  • Featuring approximately 70 sculptural works – selected from area collections for their high quality and artistic significance – the exhibition will show a wide variety of contemporary and historic objects, many never before exhibited publicly

  • Bowling Green State University graduate students Brianna Barron and Loraine Ruetz will have work in an upcoming Master of Fine Arts thesis exhibition in the Willard Wankleman Gallery

Michigan Glass Project Set for July 22-24

  • The Michigan Glass Project will host its annual art party this year on July 22 through 24
  • The main event is a music and art festival with a focus on fundraising through the sale of artwork
  • Raising funds for Art Road, a Detroit nonprofit whose mission is to bring art classes back to Detroit Public Schools
  • In 2015, MGP wrote a $40,000 check to Art Road and the group can’t wait to top that amount this year
