Art Imitates Life Next at Glass AxisOpening Tomorrow!

  • A new exhibition – Art Imitates Life by Elizabeth Johnson – will open tomorrow, March 11, at Glass Axis in Columbus with an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m.
  • The exhibition, featuring Johnson’s hyper realistic glass artwork, will run through April 23
  • Johnson is an established glass artist featured in numerous galleries across the U.S. and internationally; she has been published in several glass books including 1000 Beads and Contemporary Glass Art
  • She currently resides in Boulder, Colo., where she makes her artwork using both the torch and pate de verre processes

Residency Available at Salem State UniversityNew!

  • Spend the month of July in Salem, Mass. at Salem State University blowing glass with three other artists
  • The Rosenberg Residency is a four-week residency held annually in July; four artists will be selected to spend the month working on their own creations in a well-equipped studio
  • The accepted artists will assist each other daily, working in teams to realize their individual artistic goals; housing and a meals allowance are included
  • Previous residents include  Danny White and Grant Garmezy

Raise a Glass to Barware Talk at TMANew!

  • Most curator talks seem more academic than exciting but the Toledo Museum of Art has one coming up with a twist – it includes a cash bar and handmade glass objects
  • Beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 24, in the GlasSalon, Jutta Page, TMA’s curator of glass and decorative arts will discuss the history of barware and the multitude of functional glass objects used in the creation and serving of the perfect cocktail
  • The talk is inspired by the Toledo Symphony’s presentation of the “little orchestra” Pink Martini, which begins at 8 p.m. in the Peristyle
  • The talk is free and includes a cash bar with cocktails and other mixed drink classics
  • In keeping with the theme of the evening, TMA artists in the Glass Studio made a pink martini pitcher and an edition of pink martini goblets that will be available for purchase

Glass Academy Hiring for the Academy and Cedar PointNew!

  • The Glass Academy in Dearborn, Mich., is currently hiring glassblowers for year-round employment opportunities, along with a seasonal staff May thru Labor Day, this year including the summer glassblowing team at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio
  • The Academy is looking for individuals who enjoy working with people in a fun, engaging team environment, who they will train to conduct glassblowing demonstrations, make basic production items and assist visitors in making of simple glass items

  • The 2016 International Flameworking Conference will take place next week in the Glass Education Center at Salem Community College, Carneys Point, N.J.
  • The featured artist for this year’s conference will be Eusheen Goines

Third Thursday Next WeekNew!

  • The third Thursday this month is March 17

Culinary Arts Exhibition at Hawk Galleries in Columbus

  • Emily Brock and John Miller are featured glass artists in the current exhibition at Hawk Galleries in Columbus that continues through April 24 http://hawkgalleries.com/
  • Titled Culinary Arts, the exhibition focuses on food and places where food is sold or consumed
  • The exhibition also includes paintings and bronze sculptures of food by the team of Luis Montoya and Leslie Oritz

Tom Hawk to Speak at Bowling Green

  • Tom Hawk of the Hawk Galleries in Columbus is planning a trip to Bowling Green to meet with BGSU students, critique their work and present a special lecture on the entrepreneurial and professional aspects of glass art
  • The public is welcome to attend a lecture by Tom beginning at 6 p.m. Monday, March 28 in the School of Art

Michigan Glass Project Set for July 22-24

  • The Michigan Glass Project will host its annual art party this year on July 22 through 24
  • The main event is a music and art festival with a focus on fundraising through the sale of artwork
  • Raising funds for Art Road, a Detroit nonprofit whose mission is to bring art classes back to Detroit Public Schools
  • In 2015, MGP wrote a $40,000 check to Art Road and the group can’t wait to top that amount this year

Special Workshop with Fritz Dreisbach, Edward T. Schmid After GAS

  • Fritz Dreisbach and Edward T. Schmid will conduct a special glassblowing workshop on June 12-14 in Corning, N.Y.
  • The three-day class will follow the Corning GAS conference
  • The class meets from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with evening practice
  • In this workshop students will study glassblowing history and techniques with two legendary educators and pioneers of the studio glass movement
  • The class will demonstrate color techniques, hot bit work and functional vessel-making utilizing both controlled and organic forms
  • Maximum of six students; lots of bench time and focused study; intermediate glassblowing experience suggested

Hands-On Glass 25th Anniversary Open House Celebration June 10

Glass Included in BFA Senior Thesis Exhibition at BGSU

  • The BFA Senior Thesis Exhibition is the final show for students graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Bowling Green State University
  • It is a juried selection of art in all media that showcases a cohesive and accomplished body of work by each of the talented participating artists
  • Four glass students are included in this year’s exhibition: Kara O’Dea, Jon Zap, Davis Hartman and Devin Bader
  • The exhibition will be on display from March 20 through April 3 in the Dorothy Uber Bryan and Willard Wankelman Galleries at BGSU
  • An opening reception will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 19; the awards presentation will begin at 7 p.m.

Palmer Scholarship Deadline Extended; Applications Due March 31

  • The deadline to apply for a 2016 Palmer Scholarship from the Toledo Museum of Art has been extended to March 31
  • The Palmer Scholarship provides funding for travel for an individual(s) to pursue a course of study in an art-related field
  • The award recipient(s) will receive up to $8,000 toward the costs of travel—including airfare, hotel and meal expenses—either domestic or abroad, to enhance their studies
  • Project examples include advancing creative skills, conducting research and studying educational techniques
  • Applicants must reside in northwest Ohio
  • The award recipient(s) must complete the travel within one year of notification; awards will be announced in late March

Indigenous Beauty Exhibition Includes Two Glass Sculptures

  • The Indigenous Beauty exhibition that opened this week at the Toledo Museum of Art includes two objects made with glass by Preston Singletary
  • Indigenous Beauty:  Masterworks of American Indian Art from the Diker Collection features more than 100 objects representing tribes across North America
  • Preston Singletary, an artist of Tlingit heritage, is represented in the exhibition by Oystercatcher Rattle, 2011, blown and sand-carved glass, human hair, 22 x 17 x 6 inches
  • The second glass sculpture is a Singletary collaboration with Tammy Garcia, an artist of Santa Clara Pueblo heritage: Walrus Ivory, 12 3/4 X 14 inches; the object looks like a ceremonial pipe
  • Garcia is also represented by a clay pot that is characteristic of her deeply cut ceramic work

Contemporary Glass Exhibition at TMA Opens April 15

  • An exhibition of contemporary glass at the Toledo Museum of Art will open April 15 and continue through Sept. 4
  • Hot Spot: Contemporary Glass from Private Collections coincides with the 10th anniversary of TMA’s Glass Pavilion
  • Featuring approximately 70 sculptural works – selected from area collections for their high quality and artistic significance – the exhibition will show a wide variety of contemporary and historic objects, many never before exhibited publicly
