Gathered Makes Glass for Glass Symphony – Performance Tonight!

  • Gathered Glassblowing Studio designed six one-of- a-kind pieces in response to the six movements of the Philip Glass Symphony “Heroes”
  • WGTE’s film crew then created six short films of the Gathered team making the glass
  • Tonight, Oct. 13, when the Toledo Symphony performs the music, the edited video will be projected behind the orchestra for all to watch
  • The six pieces will be auctioned during a reception immediately following the performance
  • The “artifacts” of this collaboration – the glass objects – tell a story of Gathered’s interpretation of the music, and so do the films

Upcoming at the Glass Pavilion – Talk Tomorrow!

  • Doreen Garner, an artist from Brooklyn, N.Y., is in town for a GAPP residency Oct. 12-19; she will give a talk about her work at 7 p.m. tomorrow, Oct. 14 in the GlasSalon http://www.doreengarner.com/
  • A lively, edgy opening is being planned for an Art in Food celebration on Oct. 22; the ticketed, black-tie-optional  event will include a glass fashion show organized by Laura Donefer

Loraine Ruetz in Exhibition at Ann Arbor Art Center – Opening Tomorrow!

  • Loraine Ruetz, glass instructor at Bowling Green State University, has had two glass sculptures accepted in an upcoming exhibition at the Ann Arbor Art Center

Henry Ford Museum Opens Modern Glass Gallery Oct. 14 – Opening Tomorrow!

  • “Step inside the new Davidson-Gerson Modern Glass Gallery to experience how science and art collided during an unexpected chapter in the history of American glass”
  • That’s the pitch from The Henry Ford Museum announcing the Friday, Oct. 14, opening of their Davidson-Gerson Modern Glass Gallery
  • THF says the gallery will trace the innovation story of Studio Glass from its founding in 1962 to the present by examining selected artists and their contributions http://tinyurl.com/jn4du4e
  • As reported in this newsletter in July, the Museum has thousands of historic glass objects but until now, only a few pieces had been shown in period rooms
  • The Museum recently received a substantial collection of contemporary glass, which brings its holdings up to the present time
  • The new gallery is in a space previously dedicated to silver and pewter
  • Next up in glass for THF will be the Greenfield Village Glass Gallery, a new exhibition space in a building now being renovated for opening in April 2017

Matt Paskiet Sculpture Installation at Mercy Cancer Center – New!

  • A glass sculpture by Matt Paskiet is currently being installed in the lobby of the Mercy Health – Perrysburg Cancer Center
  • The space is known as the Andrew And Karen Merrels Welcome Center; the sculpture was made possible by a donation from Karen Merrels, as a tribute to her husband Andrew
  • Featuring 400 blown glass birds of various colors, each representing a different type of cancer, the sculpture is suspended from the ceiling to create the appearance of a flock in flight, hopefully uplifting the spirits of patients, their families and others who see the work
  • A plaque with the installation says: “The graceful and colorful birds soar above the Welcome Center to remind all that within these walls is hope, faith and a sincere expression of the concept of ‘strength in numbers.’ While each cancer journey is truly an individual experience, these beautiful birds proclaim that it need never be a lonely voyage.”
  • An invitation-only dedication is planned for Nov. 4

Joanna Manousis Exhibiting Major Crystal and Mirror Installations – New!

  • Artist Joanna Manousis, who recently moved to Bowling Green from Columbus, Ohio, will be exhibiting major crystal and mirror installations this fall

Wisconsin Artist Wes Hunting at Hudson Gallery

  • Glass sculpture by Wisconsin artist Wes Hunting is included in the current Hudson Gallery exhibition http://weshuntingglass.com/
  • The group exhibition, titled “Hello, My Name Is,” continues through Nov. 12

Davin Ebanks Takes Second in Heartland Exhibition

  • A hot-sculpted granularé glass sculpture by Davin Ebanks, assistant professor and department head glass at Kent State University, won second place at the IGAA Heartland exhibit at Ball State
  • The exhibition also includes glass artwork by Toledo area artists Loraine Ruetz, Tim Stover and Brien Strancar
  • The show is at the Atrium Gallery at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., through Oct. 28; jurors were Jeff Ballard and Carmen Lozar

Free Glassblowing for U.S. Military Members and Veterans Nov. 5

  • The Toledo Museum of Art is offering free glassblowing sessions for U.S. military veterans and active-duty members on Veterans Day, Nov. 5
  • Sessions that day will be held at 10 and 11 a.m., and 1 and 3 p.m. in the Glass Pavilion Hot Shop; there are 16 spots per session; reservations are required

“Landscape of Glass in America” Exhibition at SOFA Chicago 2016

  • In November 2015, the Glass Art Society and Chihuly Garden and Glass partnered to conduct an in-depth study of the state of glass art in America with the intent of researching the most active regions for glass art, and providing a benchmark to measure future growth and trends in the industry
  • The project included two phases – a research phase that included in-depth interviews with industry leaders (collectors, gallery owners, educators, artists, etc.) and two surveys (one for the general public and one for Glass Art Society membership
  • More than 2,200 people from across the nation responded, providing a statically accurate sample of the U.S. population
  • A special exhibit at SOFA Chicago (Nov. 4-6) will be the first full presentation of the research findings including the top five trends from the study affecting the glass community at large, and works of art to elucidate those trends from galleries exhibiting at SOFA http://tinyurl.com/hezp3sz

Exhibition by BGSU Alumni/Faculty/Students/Friends

  • The Difference Between Jelly & Jam is the title of a glass exhibition featuring works by Bowling Green State University alumni, faculty, students and friends
  • The exhibition is at the Parkwood Gallery, 1838 Parkwood in The Arts Commission office across the street from the Glass Pavilion, and is part of Toledo’s Month of Glass
  • Organized by Loraine Ruetz, the show continues through Oct. 22; there will be a closing reception on Oct. 22
  • Gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday

Robin and Julia Rogers Exhibition and Visit at Gathered

  • Gathered Glassblowing Studio will welcome Robin and Julia Rogers as visiting artists Oct. 20-23
  • During their visit, the husband and wife team will create new work in their Animalia Fantastica series
  • On the night of Oct. 21, from 6 to 9 p.m., Gathered with host an open house with new work from this and other series, a hot glass performance by the Rogers, as well as refreshments; the free event is generously supported in part by Steve and Marcia Seubert, and Milt and Lee Hackel

  • Glass Axis in Columbus is currently seeking wearable art pieces for a gallery exhibition Jan. 13 through March 4

Habatat Galleries Celebrating 30 years at Navy Pier

  • Habatat Galleries will once again be at the SOFA Chicago Art Fair at Navy Pier, Nov. 3‑6
  • Their display will feature more than 50 artists working with glass
  • Here is a sample of what will be in their booth:
    • Shelley Muzylowsi Allen and Davide Salvadore have collaborated for the first time since 2012 and will have a body of work at SOFA; the last body of their work sold out
    • Richard Marquis and Nick Mount are collaborating and Habatat is planning to exhibit six works from this collaboration at SOFA Chicago
    • Stephen Rolfe Powell has just completed a new panel series that Habatat will have on display at SOFA
    • Vivian Wang will be exhibiting a new collection of six sculptures; the series is titled The Children of Edo and Habatat reports that Wang has sold out every year since 2012
    • Also on display will be the historic collection of Jean and Hilbert Sosin, which includes works from their 54 year history of collecting studio glass
    • Albert Paley and Paul Stankard will be featured; Paley will be giving a talk and Stankard will give a talk and have a book signing

Four-Person Show at River House Arts

  • River House Arts and Contemporary Art Toledo are presenting HUSH.ex, an exhibition of works in glass and mixed media by Philadelphia artists Megan Biddle, Amber Cowan, Jessica Jane Julius and Sharyn O’Mara
  • The show will be on view through Oct. 22 at 425 Jefferson Avenue, Toledo http://www.river-house-arts.com/
  • HUSH.ex is the second iteration of a body of work that debuted last spring at the Philadelphia Art Alliance
  • Working over the course of a year, the artists – who are also colleagues on the glass faculty at Tyler School of Art, Temple University – created visually and conceptually diverse works that include site-specific installations as well as individual sculptures and drawings
  • At the outset, the artists recognized commonalities in their practice: reflection (literal and figurative) and distillation; they began with a collective desire to see past the overstimuli of the digital age and to focus on the analog, narrow the vocabulary from color to gray scale, and capture the power of memory and reflection in interpretation of experience
  • And yet, there is nothing simplistic either in the ambition or scope of any of the artists’ work
  • This ambition and scope of the project and the artists have not gone unnoticed; Biddle, Cowan, Julius and O’Mara are featured in the September 2016 edition of the publication, Glass Quarterly; in it, Alexander Rosenberg writes: “It is uncommon to find the flashy and performative medium of glass used to express silence or solitude, but the four artists here offer a convincing alternative to the noise and hyper-connectivity of digital culture.”

Directions Exhibition at Glass Axis in Columbus

  • Directions, a juried glass art exhibition, continues through Oct. 22 at Glass Axis in Columbus www.glassaxis.org
  • The exhibition showcases glass art inspired by the many directions our lives take, from the familiar to the foreign; art in the exhibition is inspired by travels throughout the country, the world and within the artists’ individual microcosms
  • The exhibit features work that is comprised of at least 50 percent glass and includes blown glass with hand-painted imagery, kiln-formed (fused) glass and flame worked glass sculptures
