Kari Russell-Pool at Cleveland Institute of ArtClosing Reception Tonight!

  • There will be a closing reception from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Aug. 11, for the exhibition Kari Russell-Pool: Perspective, on display through tomorrow, Aug. 12, at the Cleveland Institute of Art
  • Kari Russell-Pool (CIA ’90) is best known for her innovative approach to flame-worked glass often described as creating form from pattern; filled with personal content and commentary about our present society, the hard work of relationships, and experience as a mom, her work tells many stories
  • Perspective, a series of works on paper, is a departure in medium, but not content
  • Exploring the gaming of American policy during yet another fractious political season, Russell-Pool focuses on the high stakes of these games
  • Games by definition are reduced to winners and losers, devoid of compromise while compromise is the cornerstone of a strong democracy
  • As a woman with a mature and informed understanding of what it means to both choose and devote oneself to parenthood, she confronts the absurdity of reducing access to birth control and the horror of subjecting our children to gun violence
  • The exhibition is in the Ann and Norman Roulet Student + Alumni Gallery, 11610 Euclid Ave.,  Cleveland, Ohio 44106, 800.223.4700 http://tinyurl.com/gq7r8gf
  • Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday

Ben Schonberger Residency Aug. 8-17Talk and Book Signing Tomorrow!

  • Ben Schonberger will give a free public lecture about his work and his residency at the Toledo Museum of Art at 7 p.m. tomorrow, Aug. 12, in the GlasSalon; he will also sign copies of his books directly after the lecture and both of the artist’s books ‘Beautiful Pig’ (2013) and ‘Hammer’ (2016) will be available for purchase
  • During his Aug. 8–17 residency, Schonberger is working with the Hot Shop’s glass team on a series of glass brass knuckles; it is a continuation of the themes he documented in his self-published books “HAMMER and “Beautiful Pig,” the latter of which was short-listed for the Anamorphosis Prize 2015
  • “My work examines multiple systems that explore how identity is constructed and catalogued,” said Schonberger. “Focusing primarily on masculine archetypes, I meet men and we establish a working relationship. They let me into their home and workspace, granting me access to their objects, images and history. Giving their belongings the parameters of an archive, I filter and arrange items into compositions to be photographed.”
  • Schonberger is a 2013 Graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Fine Art (MFA Photography), in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

Ben Schonberger Exhibition at River House ArtsOpening Tomorrow!

  • River House Arts, in conjunction with Contemporary Art Toledo, has announced plans to present Beautiful Pig, an exhibition of work by artist, photographer and archivist Ben Schonberger
  • The show opens with a public reception from 8 to 10 p.m. tomorrow, Aug. 12, and runs thru Sept. 8 at 425 Jefferson Avenue, Toledo
  • The exhibition occurs on the heels of Schonberger’s GAPP residency at the Toledo Museum of Art Glass Pavilion, which concludes Friday, Aug. 12 with a 7 p.m. lecture and book signing by the artist in TMA’s GlasSalon
  • Centered on a trove of photographs and ephemera collected by a former Detroit police officer during the latter part of the 20th Century, purposefully assembled and augmented by the artist, Beautiful Pig offers a provocative, timely, and unflinching look at cultural identity, self-perception, and the realities of racial disparity in law enforcement
  • The project began when Schonberger, while working in Detroit, acquired a box of photographs from Marty Gaynor, a retired police officer
  • Gaynor had documented the entirety of his career through thousands of images, including countless Polaroids of individuals he had arrested
  • Intrigued by the scope of the collection and the man responsible for amassing it, Schonberger embarked on a years-long collaborative process with Gaynor; the result is in an intensely personal yet culturally and historically revealing archive.
  • Beautiful Pig appeared in 2013 as a self-published book to overwhelming critical acclaim; it was shortlisted by both the Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation Award in 2013 and the Anamorphosis Prize in 2015
  • Today the book can be found in the New York Public Library, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, MoMA, the Los Angeles Contemporary Archive, The Arts Library at Yale University and nearly a dozen other cultural institutions
  • While portions of the collection have appeared in group exhibitions, the upcoming show at River House Arts will be first time Beautiful Pig has been presented in its entirety; it includes two works in neon
