Exhibition Event at Michigan Hot Glass April 30Happening Saturday!

  • The work of four artists will be on display from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at Michigan Hot Glass in Detroit
  • The event will be held in conjunction with the complex-wide spring open house at the Russell Industrial Center, 1604 Clay Ave., Detroit
  • Participating artists are Albert Young, Maxwell Davis, Ted Hadfield and Ian Zapico; their work is in glass, ceramics and prints

Three Questions for Alli Hoag in Glass QuarterlyNew!

  • Glass Quarterly has published an article titled 3 Questions…for Alli Hoag
  • 3 Questions… is a regular feature of Glass Quarterly, which is published by UrbanGlass in Brooklyn, N.Y.
  • In the article, Hoag revealed that:
    • She has a piece in the “Lifeforms” travelling exhibition, which will be on exhibit during this summer’s Glass Art Society Conference (May 20-June 22), at the Houghton Gallery in Corning, New Yor
    • She and Tinna Thorsteindottir will be performing as Bylta this summer (with BGSU students and Toledo area artists performing with us!) at the Chrysler Museum Glass Studio in Norfolk, Virginia, on June 16 and UrbanGlass in Brooklyn, New York, on June 18, presenting a new performance, entitled “Sending”
    • She will be at Pittsburgh Glass Center teaching a casting workshop called “Glass Taxidermy” from June 27-July 1
    • She is working toward a solo exhibition of entirely new work at University of North Georgia’s Roy C. Moore Gallery, which will be up Jan. 12 through Feb. 9, 2017

Alli Hoag in 2015 Glass Art Society JournalNew!

  • Alli Hoag, assistant professor and area head of glass at Bowling Green State University, has an article in the 2015 Glass Art Society Journal
  • The Journal is issued each spring and recaps the previous year’s conference lectures, presentations, and proceedings, in this case the 44th annual conference held in San Jose, Calif.
  • Hoag gave the emerging artist presentation in San Jose and the article in the Journal is an edited version of the text of her presentation
  • The Journal is mailed to individuals who were GAS members during the previous year

Glass Art Society Accepting 2016 TAG Grant ApplicationsNew!

  • Technology Advancing Glass (TAG) provides an annual research grant to an artist or group of artists exploring new materials, techniques, making methods or applications of technology that will generally advance the field of art made with glass
  • Last year TAG received 39 unique and innovative proposals
  • The committee is looking forward to seeing what this year’s applicants will bring to the table
  • Project proposals are open for ideas such as: new materials, production techniques, safe shipping techniques, new tools, adhesives, ways to create glass sculpture animated with electronics… and beyond
  • The deadline for applications is July 31

  • Laura Donefer has agreed to bring her 2016 glass fashion show to Toledo for a special event celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Glass Pavilion
  • The ticketed ($125) Toledo event , set for Saturday, Oct. 22, will include red-carpet entry, gourmet grazing and the fashion show, followed by the opening of the Museum’s Art in Food celebration
  • The team organizing the event needs help transporting costumes form Corning to Toledo after the Glass Art Society conference

Arts Commission, Toledo Symphony Collaborate for Hot Glass 2016New!

  • The Arts Commission and the Toledo Symphony will expand on The Arts Commission’s historically successful Hot Glass fundraising event with a series of events in September to October, culminating in a Hot Glass/Cool Music gala auction event tentatively set for 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20
  • With support from ProMedica, the Arts Commission and the Symphony will create a multi-day event, celebrating Toledo’s heritage as the Glass City, especially as the birthplace of the studio glass movement
  • The exhibition will open in mid-September and is free and open to the public; free guided tours for groups of 10 or more will be available

UrbanGlass offering classes before and after GAS

  • UrbanGlass in Brooklyn, N.Y., is offering a wide variety of classes with visiting artists from around the world for individuals traveling through New York City before and after the GAS Conference in June

Stacy Lynn Smith, Wayne Strattman Teaching at Chrysler Museum

  • The Chrysler Museum Glass Studio is offering two special guest instructor classes this summer
  • Bullseye instructor Stacy Lynn Smith will explore a variety of methods for screen printing on kiln-fired glass; the fundamentals include image preparation, screen coating and exposing, printing with powders, and firing schedules
  • Other topics include multiple firings, textured prints, wafers, image registration and thick blocks
  • Classes are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, July 26-31
  • Wayne Strattman, one of the world’s leading artists in neon and plasma, will take students beyond conventional neon techniques
  • Using 19th century Geissler tubes as inspiration, students will work borosilicate glass, colored phosphors and metals into pieces that glow and react in novel ways
  • The class will also explore advanced glass processing techniques that enable pumping plasma into blown glass in a kiln
  • Classes are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, August 2-7

Benzaiten Center Seeks Full-Time Flame-Working Studio Manager

  • The Benzaiten Center for Creative Arts in Lake Worth, Fla., is looking for a full-time flame-working studio manager
  • The new 14,000-square-foot fine art fabrication facility already has an active hot shop for glass blowing, a slumping and fusing studio, and a gallery; now it wants to expand the operation to include a flame-working studio and fine arts metal foundry
  • The Center would like interested flame workers to contact them ASAP as they will be building the studio in the next couple of months and would greatly appreciate input in its design and equipment needs

  • Adam Sanzenbacher and Matt Paskiet have glass sculptural work in the Best of 2016 exhibition at the Ohio Craft Museum in Columbus
  • Ohio Designer Craftsmen’s 33rd annual juried members’ exhibition showcases exemplary works in clay, glass, fiber, metal, wood and mixed media
  • Sanzenbacher’s kiln-cast glass and laminated birch plywood sculpture Soles Lost to Space (and) Time won the Ohio Designer Craftsmen Board of Trustees Emerging Craftsman Award
  • Paskiet’s blown glass entry is titled Azul Spiderweb Sculpture
  • Tom Muir, professor, area head, jewelry and metals at BGSU, has a copper, brass and FDM plastic print in the show titled Pig Snout Belt Buckle; the object won the Brian Lonsway Memorial Award for Humor in Craft

Contemporary Glass Exhibition at TMA

Michelle Rial Exhibition at Glass Axis

  • Michelle Rial, a glass artist focusing primarily in fused and kiln-formed glass, will have a solo exhibition at Glass Axis in Columbus http://www.glasstf.com/
  • Up Against the Wall! will open from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 13, in THE Kennedy Galleries and remain on display through June 25; Rial will give an artist talk at 7 p.m. during the opening
  • The goal of the exhibition is to expand people’s thoughts about glass, from the table to the wall, and to give another perspective on glass and art
  • Rial’s creations are inspired by nature, multi-layered and textural artworks containing both single- and multiple-panel compositions, incorporating a variety of glass elements

Michigan Glass Project Set for July 22-24

  • The Michigan Glass Project will host its annual art party this year on July 22 through 24
  • The main event is a music and art festival with a focus on fundraising through the sale of artwork
  • Raising funds for Art Road, a Detroit nonprofit whose mission is to bring art classes back to Detroit Public Schools
  • In 2015, MGP wrote a $40,000 check to Art Road and the group can’t wait to top that amount this year
