Edith Franklin Youth Arts Fund Event – Opening Today!

  • The University of Toledo’s Center for Visual Arts is hosting a reception and auction/sale of selected archival works by Edith Franklin, as well as works by other local artists donated in her honor
  • All event proceeds will benefit the Edith Franklin Youth Arts Fund at the Toledo Community Foundation
  • The works to be sold will be available for viewing beginning today, June 30
  • The open house, auction and sale will take place from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, July 7
  • While most of the work in the exhibition is likely to be ceramics, I am including a notice here because Edith was much loved by the glass community and participated in the first of the now-infamous 1962 workshops that launched the studio glass movement

Call for Artists: Northwest Ohio Art Exhibition at BGSU – Deadline Tomorrow!

  • A Call for Artists has been issued for the ninth annual Northwest Ohio Community Art Exhibition at the Bowling Green State University Fine Arts Center, July 15 through 30
  • Online entries will be accepted through Friday, July 1, at www.NoWOHartSHOW.org

TIGA Residency Program Accepting 2016 Applications – Deadline Tomorrow!

  • Applications are being accepted through Friday, July 1, for the 2016 artist in residence program at the Toyama City Institute of Glass Art (TIGA) http://toyamaglass.ac.jp/
  • In 1991, TIGA was established in Japan for artists and crafts people who want to use glass as their chosen medium of expression
  • In 2010, TIGA started an artist in residence program aiming to promote glass art and cultural activities in Toyama City, to invigorate the local communities and to develop human resources

Summer of Glass Exhibit in Fort Wayne – New!

  • Last Saturday, the Fort Wayne Museum of Art opened its fourth annual Summer of Glass exhibits; the displays will be up through Sept. 11
  • One part of the exhibition includes work from the 44th International Glass Invitational at the Habatat Galleries in Royal Oak, Mich.
  • Work in the International is evaluated by a panel of three judges and 24 are selected as the winners; those works, buyers willing, go to Fort Wayne for display
  • Two other glass artists, David Salvadore and Albert Paley, also will have separate shows running at the same time in the FWMoA
  • Altogether, there are about 70 pieces of glass art on display at the FWMoA http://www.fwmoa.org/

Ben Schonberger GAPP Residency Aug. 8-17 – New!

  • The next artist in the GAPP residency program at the Toledo Museum of Art will be photographer Ben Schonberger
  • During his Aug. 8–17 residency, Schonberger will be working with the Hot Shop’s glass team on a series of glass brass knuckles; it is a continuation of the themes he documented in his self-published books “HAMMER and “Beautiful Pig,” the latter of which was short-listed for the Anamorphosis Prize 2015
  • “My work examines multiple systems that explore how identity is constructed and catalogued,” said Schonberger. “Focusing primarily on masculine archetypes, I meet men and we establish a working relationship. They let me into their home and workspace, granting me access to their objects, images and history. Giving their belongings the parameters of an archive, I filter and arrange items into compositions to be photographed.”
  • Schonberger will give a free public lecture about his work and his residency in Toledo at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, in the GlasSalon
  • “Conceptually, glass is an ideal material for producing the knuckles because it represents the vulnerable and fragile state of the archive and the cultural implications that are attached to knuckles.”
  • Schonberger is a full-time visiting lecturer at the University of Akron – Mary Schiller Myers School of Art; he is a 2013 Graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Fine Art (MFA Photography), in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

Fired Up: Women in Glass – from Toledo to Charlotte – New!

  • An innovative collaboration between The Mint Museum and the Toledo Museum of Art will present an exhibition in Charlotte, N.C., showing works in glass by women
  • The exhibition at the Mint Museum UPTOWN runs from Oct. 22, 2016 through Feb. 26, 2017
  • Co-curated by the Mint’s Senior Curator of Craft, Design & Fashion, Annie Carlano, and Toledo’s Senior Curator of Decorative Arts and Glass, Jutta Page, Fired Up: Women in Glass is the first American art museum exhibition to look at the many achievements of women working with glass, from the studio glass movement of the 1960s to 21st-century installations and mixed media works that illustrate the porous boundaries between art, craft and design
  • Drawn entirely from the collection of the Toledo Art Museum of Art, the exhibition features several recent acquisitions that debut in Charlotte
  • Ranging in scale from the tiny to the monumental, an international array of approximately 40 functional objects and sculpture will demonstrate the keen conceptual, design and technical contributions of the underappreciated artists

Glass Artists Making Special Vessels for Hot Shots

  • About a dozen area glassblowers were recently busy making one vessel each for an Arts Commission “Hot Shots” event planned in conjunction with a Month of Glass
  • The idea behind the fundraising event is to pair up glass artists with Art Loop venues and have them collaborate on a vessel to be displayed in the participating venue; there will be a public vote to determine a People’s Choice winner and all the vessels will be auctioned off at the Hot Shots Young Professionals Vessel Auction and Tasting scheduled for Oct. 1 in the Edison Lobby
  • Participating artists are Kristine Rumman, Matt Paskiet, Steve Cothern, Chris DeMuro, Adam Goldberg, Sten Neuber, Mike Stevens, Brien Strancar, Eli Lipman, Ryan Thompson, Joel O’Dorisio and Leonard Marty

William Morris Sculpture Sells for $227,000

  • A glass sculpture by William Morris sold Tuesday at Bonhams in New York for $227,000 including the buyer’s premium http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/23409/lot/42/
  • The sculpture is “Canopic Jar: African Bull,” 1995 blown glass, jar and cover inscribed William Morris 1995, overall height 43-1/4”; width 12”; approximate depth 16”
  • Another canopic jar by Morris (“Canopic Jar: Panther,” 1992) sold the same night at Bonhams for $191,000 including premium
  • Founded in 1793, Bonhams is one of the world’s largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques

Call for Artists: Indiana Glass Arts Alliance

  • The Indiana Glass Arts Alliance has issued a call to artists for its exhibition GATHERING: Contemporary Glass from the Heartland 2016, Sept. 27 through Oct. 28
  • The exhibition is a regional, juried exhibition showcasing the best of emerging and established glass artists from Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky and Wisconsin—the heartland of America; artists compete for up to $2,500 in cash awards
  • It is sponsored by the Indiana Glass Arts Alliance (IGAA), a non-profit organization located in Indianapolis, Ball State University School of Art and Goezler Investment Management
  • The deadline for entries is Aug. 7; jurors are Jeff Ballard and Carmen Lozar

44th International Continues at Habatat Galleries

  • The 44th Glass International – the largest exhibition of contemporary glass art in the world – continues through July 22 at Habatat Galleries in Royal Oak, Mich.
  • More than 100 artists from 24 countries have two works each in the show

Michigan Glass Project Set for July 22-24

  • The Michigan Glass Project will host its annual art party this year on July 22 through 24
  • The main event is a music and art festival with a focus on fundraising through the sale of artwork
  • The group is raising funds for Art Road, a Detroit nonprofit whose mission is to bring art classes back to Detroit Public Schools
  • In 2015, MGP wrote a $40,000 check to Art Road and the group can’t wait to top that amount this year

Contemporary Glass Exhibition at TMA

  • An exhibition of contemporary glass is on display now at the Toledo Museum of Art
  • Hot Spot: Contemporary Glass from Private Collections coincides with the 10th anniversary of TMA’s Glass Pavilion and continues through Sept. 18
