Upcoming Events with Brien StrancarSaturday!

  • Brien Strancar has been busy with his residency at The Works in Newark, Ohio, but is still active in Toledo
  • Gallerie 333; a show is open there now and will be featured on the Thursday Art Loop on Nov. 19; the work consists of new pieces completed before he left for his residency
  • Brien’s wife Paige has installed about 150 of his onion bottles at the Black Kite coffee shop to bring some color to the areas above the windows
  • Handmade Toledo’s Holiday Maker’s Mart is coming up on Saturday, Nov. 14, and Brien will be there with a table selling Strancar Studios wares including fall and winter items
  • Brien will have a show for his residency opening from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday Dec. 3 at The Works in Newark; the show will continue through the end of his residency on Dec. 20, and there will be an open house all day on Saturday Dec. 5
  • This show will provide the first look at work made during the residency, featuring geometric murrini patterning and geometrically inspired vessels; he will also be showing a second body of work consisting of engraved bottles http://www.attheworks.org/

Jubilee Museum and Catholic Cultural Center Shows Stained GlassEnding Sunday!

  • The Jubilee Museum and Catholic Cultural Center, the largest museum of diversified Catholic art and artifacts in the United States, is hosting “Illuminating our Faith,” a stained glass windows exhibition through Sunday, Nov. 15
  • The museum is just up the street from Glass Axis at 57 South Grubb St., Columbus www.jubileemuseum.org

Sten Neuber “Owlet” Selected for Craft Exhibition in EvansvilleNew!

  • Radioactive Owlet by Sten Neuber has been chosen for the 44th Mid-States Craft Exhibition at the Evansville Museum in Evansville, Ind. http://www.emuseum.org/
  • The exhibition will be on display from Jan. 17 through March 6, 2016
  • There will be an awards ceremony and reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on Jan. 23
  • Open to artists residing in the six states of Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio and Missouri, the competition will feature ceramics, glass, textiles, metalwork, wood and mixed media
  • The Juror for this year’s competition is Julia Black Andrews, Executive Director of the Coral Springs Museum of Art (Florida)

  • Sten Neuber will be visiting artist at Firenation for the Holiday Open House from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4

Sylvia Levenson Sculpture Acquired by TMANew!

  • The museum that shows us a Karen LaMonte glass dress next to a 2nd-century Roman depiction of the draped female figure Isis now gives us a “strange little girl” in a room with elegant American paintings from the 18th century
  • A new TMA acquisition, Strange Little Girl #7 (Nena Cuervo), kilncast Bullseye® glass and mixed media, 2014, by Silvia Levenson, is now on display next to John Singleton Copley’s oil painting Young Lady with a Bird and a Dog in Gallery 29
  • Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1957, Levenson now lives in Lago Maggiore, Italy, and Buenos Aires; she believes her work is an expression of her soul and uses glass for its potential as a narrative medium

  • The Jennifer Sears Glass Art Studio in Lincoln City, Ore. has  a job opportunity for a fulltime, permanent intermediate glassblower starting immediately
  • The studio is on the coast of Oregon a few blocks from the ocean; during the summer they have a very high volume of tourists and will be open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Candidates must be good with people and proficient in production work i.e. floats, ornaments, starfish, hearts and floppy bowls
  • Glassblower will work with people who have not had any previous experience with glassblowing for 20 – 45 minute sessions; the shop also buys production work from its blowers
  • The studio is looking for two fulltime blowers, one immediately; salary is dependent upon skill level and experience; ranges $16/hour to $26/hour

Jeff Mack Takes Job at Corning Museum

  • Jeff Mack, Glass Studio production manager at the Toledo Museum of Art, is leaving to join the Corning Museum of Glass as hot glass programs supervisor http://tinyurl.com/o2tudbc
  • Jeff will support hot glass programs as well as projects on- and off-site, and will be responsible for overseeing daily activities in the Museum’s new hot shop, which opened in March
  • He will also help manage deployments such as GlassLab and the Hot Glass Roadshow
  • Jeff has been at the Glass Pavilion for the past seven years; before that he worked as a glassblower and instructor at the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village

Robin, Julia Rogers Have Residency and Exhibition at Melting Point

  • Robin and Julia Rogers will have a second residency and exhibition at the Melting Point in Sedona, Ariz., Nov. 17 through 21, with an opening that Saturday evening
  • Robin and Julia lived in Bowling Green a few years back while Julia completed work on her graduate degree from BGSU; they are currently in Norfolk, Va.

Mark Matthews Teaching at Corning in February

  • Mark Matthews will conduct his constantly evolving and innovative workshop “Color and Graphic Systems in Glass” at The Studio within the Corning Museum of Glass, Feb. 8 through 13

Joey Kirkpatrick and Flora C. Mace at Museum of Glass

  • The exhibition Joey Kirkpatrick and Flora C. Mace: Every Soil Bears Not Everything continues through May 15, 2016 at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Wash. http://tinyurl.com/obxx4t5
  • Joey Kirkpatrick and Flora C. Mace are pioneers of early contemporary glass and were close colleagues of Dale Chihuly and William Morris, often trading skills to develop signature works
  • Kirkpatrick and Mace began their collaboration at Pilchuck Glass School in 1979; their first series evolved out of Mace’s desire to devise a method of incorporating Kirkpatrick’s delicate line drawings as surface design onto blown cylinders
  • Kirkpatrick made elaborate “drawings” in bent wire that were colored in with glass cane. These drawings were then “picked up” onto the vessel in the hot shop; the process was groundbreaking in its innovation http://www.kirkpatrick-mace.com/
  • With objects from 160 crates of work spanning 1970 to present, the exhibition tells a major chapter in the story of the Studio Glass movement; “There is no doubt that this exhibition is long overdue,” notes MOG Artistic Director Susan Warner

Erwin Redl Work at Carl Solway Gallery in Cincinnati

  • The Carl Solway Gallery in Cincinnati is showing work by Erwin Redl, who had a GAPP residency at the Toledo Museum of Art in 2013 http://www.solwaygallery.com/
  • The exhibition at Solway will feature work from 2010-2015, including an installation composed of digitally controlled LED light sculptures, kinetic sculpture, drawings and prints
  • An Austrian-born artist based in Bowling Green and New York City, Redl is best known for large-scale light installations for art museums, public buildings and corporations; his work transforms the medium of light into immersive, tangible experiences for viewers

  • “The Journey,” by Rebecca Szparagowski of Bowling Green, is one of 34 pieces from 27 artists in the exhibition “GATHERING: Contemporary Glass from the Heartland”
  • Rebecca has also been notified that her artwork has been selected for a Best in Show award
