Scott Benefield Will Give Free Talk at TMATomorrow Evening!

  • Scott Benefield will give a free talk about his work in the GlasSalon at 7 p.m. tomorrow, Aug. 28
  • Benefield is a GAPP visiting artist and is leading a SOLD OUT four-day workshop in the TMA Glass Studio introducing the basic skills of working with cane, today through Sunday
  • An artist, educator and writer, Benefield received his MFA from Ohio State University in 1990; he is a past president of the Glass Art Society and currently serves on its advisory committee; he has been a fellow at the Creative Glass Center of America and an artist-in-residence at the National College of Art & Design in Ireland, North Lands Creative Glass in the U.K., Vrij Glas in the Netherlands, Pittsburgh Glass Center, the Corning Museum of Glass and the Museum of Glass in Tacoma

Dan Mirer to Lecture at BGSU Sept. 2New and Wednesday!

  • Dan Mirer will be a visiting artist at Bowling Green State University next week and present an artist lecture at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2,  in Room 1206, the Glass Studio
  • Mirer will be at BGSU Sept 2 and 3 with instructional demonstrations during classes; those interested can observe the class from 11:30 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2
  • In his work, Mirer develops a dialogue between design and craft to create designs that combine processes; he makes elegantly shaped vessels, including a unique series of functional and decorative hand-blown bottles
  • Mirer’s work has been shown at UrbanGlass, Bellevue Art Museum and in the Smithsonian Craft Show
  • A graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology and Alfred University, he currently lives and works in Corning, N.Y. www.danmirer.com

Glass Axis and Hawk Galleries present Nancy CallanNew!

  • Exhibition opening Thursday, Sept. 24, at Hawk Galleries, 153 East Main St., Columbus
  • Demonstrations on Friday, Sept. 25, at Glass Axis Studio, 610 W. Town St., Columbus
  • Meet visiting artists Nancy Callan and Steve Jensen at Hawk Galleries from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday; Callan and Jensen will discuss their independent work and careers with an exhibition and informal artist talks; their work will be on view at the gallery through Nov. 8
  • A free glass blowing demonstration by Callan will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, at Glass Axis Studio

Fritz Dreisbach Returns for GAPP Residency, WorkshopNew!

  • Fritz Dreisbach, the “Johnny Appleseed” of the American Studio Glass movement, returns to Toledo in October as a Guest Artist Pavilion Project (GAPP) resident to create new works of art and teach a four-day workshop
  • Dreisbach will give a free talk about his work at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, in the GlasSalon
  • Since helping establish the studio glass movement in the 1960s, Dreisbach has traveled the world teaching workshops, presenting lectures and consulting at glass factories
  • The visit will be his second GAPP residency; he was the first artist in the program when it started in 2006
  • The workshop – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 15-18 – will cover Dreisbach’s approach to working with a combination of traditional and non-traditional hot and cold techniques to create expressive works of art with a sophisticated form and advanced decoration; during the course of the workshop, students will work in both the hot shop and cold shop using a variety of tools and techniques http://classes.toledomuseum.org/wconnect/ShowGroups.awp

TMA Glass Studio seeks Assistant ManagerNew!

  • The Toledo Museum of Art is seeking an assistant manager who will work with the glass studio manager in the daily operations of the multi-use, state-of-the-art facility that is a major site for the museum’s programming, education and special events
  • The successful applicant will be responsible for leading the technical staff in maintaining studio operations, which include hot glass, flame working, kiln forming and stained glass studios as well as a mold-making and cold-working shop
  • The position will be lead on all maintenance related activity and assist in planning long-term projects taking place in the Glass Studio
  • Applicants should hold a Bachelor’s degree and have a minimum of two years working in a glass studio performing similar duties; a minimum of one year experience managing a glass or art studio, as well as basic mechanical knowledge of glass studio machinery, tools, electrical and plumbing systems is desired, as is experience with glass demonstrations, or at minimum experience working with glass in an educational or practical glass studio environment

Adam Goldberg, Ryan Thompson Sculpture in Hudson Gallery ExhibitionNew Information!

Pittsburgh Glass Center Auction Sept. 25

  • “Art on Fire,” Pittsburgh’s only glass art auction will be held on Friday, Sept. 25

  • Toots Zynsky will be the honorary artist for the event and her sculpture “Solleone” will be the signature item in the auction
  • New this year, PGC is offering three 10-day residencies to artists who donate to Art on Fire!

    • Artwork valued under $1,500 – selected by a jury

CGCA Fellowship Applications Now Available Online

  • The 2016 CGCA Fellowship Applications for three-month and project-based residencies are now available online http://tinyurl.com/nhv5d3l
  • The Creative Glass Center of America at WheatonArts offers fellowships to artists working in glass and has serviced glass artists and the arts community for over 30 years
  • More than 300 professional and emerging artists have been recipients of a CGCA fellowship, from the U.S. and over 26 foreign countries
  • Artists are encouraged to use their fellowships to develop and refine their work, while experimenting with both traditional and innovative glassmaking processes
  • Proposals are due on Nov. 1

Brianna Barron Sculpture Selected for Ohio Craft Museum Show

  • An interactive glass work by Brianna Barron, BGSU, will be included in the exhibition Fresh Perspectives: Young Artists with Ohio Connections at the Ohio Craft Museum in Columbus
  • The show opens Sept. 13 and runs through Oct. 25
  • The fourth edition of the Museum’s emerging artists series will showcase work in clay, glass, metal, fiber and mixed media, by 38 young artists with ties to Ohio
  • The Ohio Craft Museum is a program of Ohio Designer Craftsmen, 1665 W. 5th Ave., Columbus

Dinnerware Museum in Ann Arbor Calling for Cake Entries

  • The Dinnerware Museum in Ann Arbor, Mich., is calling for entries in all non-perishable media for its second annual juried competition; the entry deadline is Feb. 1, 2016
  • The exhibition is to showcase the best in contemporary dinnerware as it relates to the theme Cake, either functional pedestal cake stands or a sculptural work of cake that could be displayed on a cake stand, as created by artists from the United States and Canada
  • The Dinnerware Museum is the only museum in the world devoted to the subject of dinnerware, international in scope, no material limitations, including functional ware, ancient to futuristic, and fine art referencing dinnerware

“502” Celebrates Louisville’s Glass History

  • An exhibition titled “502” at Flame Run, 815 W. Market St., Louisville, is celebrating the forerunners of Louisville’s art glass scene today – the private glass studios in garages and back yards that paved the way for the five hot glass studios open in the city today
  • The exhibition continues through Sept. 26
  • The show pays homage to artists who blew glass with “tin-can technology,” artists who figured out how to build furnaces long before you could order one online
  • The show will include work by Brook Forrest White, Jr., and Greg Fleischaker who were the original hot glass artists at Glassworks in 2001; Howard Wilson, Bob Cheever, Chuck Gerson, Angela St. Vrain, W. G. Rickel, Devyn Baron, Amy Pender, and DH McNabb will also be featured

Pilchuck Glass School’s Auction Tour Oct. 28 and 29

  • Pilchuck Glass School’s auction tour for 2015 will be Oct. 28 and 29
  • The two-day excursion is packed with exclusive opportunities leading up to the big event, Pilchuck’s Annual Auction Gala on Oct. 30

Annual Seminar at the Corning Museum of Glass Oct. 16-17

  • The 54th annual Seminar on Glass at The Corning Museum of Glass will be held Oct. 16-17
  • This year’s theme, Pyrex and Material Culture, complements the Museum’s exhibit: America’s Favorite Dish: Celebrating a Century of Pyrex

Summer of Glass at Fort Wayne Museum of Art

  • A “Summer of Glass” exhibition at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art features the 43rd International Glass Invitational Award Winners
  • A second component of this group of exhibitions is a solo exhibition by Christina Bothwell, known for her figurative sculptures that explore the topics of metamorphosis and renewal
  • The third component is a group of work by international artists working in a figurative style

Steve Linn at Fort Wayne Museum of Art

Steve Linn Seeking Help for Special Sculpture

  • Steve Linn has launched a crowd-funding campaign on Kickstarter to fund the holographic portion of his project on the British cosmologist Stephen Hawking; there are some cool rewards for those who contribute
  • Steve is able to cover the costs of the rest of the materials for the sculpture but the holograms are very expensive to produce so he is trying to raise the money bit by bit.

Bergstrom-Mahler has William Morris Exhibition

  • The Bergstrom-Mahler Museum of Glass is presenting William Morris: Native Species from The George R. Stroemple Collection, through Sept. 6

  • In 2004, Stroemple proposed a commission of objects inspired by the flora and fauna of the Pacific Northwest; he asked Morris to consider the shapes and colors of the 19th century Meji ceramics and bronzes Stroemple also collects; the Native Species collection also has historic roots in the style and imagery of French Art Nouveau glass artist Emille Gallé
  • The resulting 38 vessels in the collection are intricately wrought with pine needles and cones, aspen trees, dragonflies, pheasants, ground squirrels, acorns, wild grasses, lizards and cedar boughs
