January 22, 2020

A glass-related action plan rapidly gaining support is to present a resolution to the United Nations to declare 2022 The Year of Glass. If you are involved with an organization, glass collector’s group, artist organization, museum, or any institution that is interested in glass as art or glass used in many other industries, please craft and send a letter of endorsement by January 27, 2020, in support of the initiative. All these letters will be included when the resolution is presented.

The approval process requires a formal application to the United Nations and one is currently being prepared. A decision will be made in June 2020. As part of this, as many Letters of Endorsement as possible from as wide a geographical area as possible are needed, with the closing date of January 27. These can be from museums, universities, research institutes, government laboratories, glass societies and so on. If you are able to submit such a document or know someone else who can, please pass on this request as appropriate.

Attached are several documents, including a presentation that outlines the many benefits and opportunities afforded by the UN designation, along with a timeline and actions completed by the organizing consortium to-date. A sample letter of support is also included for your reference.

Draft your letter on institutional letterhead (as appropriate), signed by yourself or a representative of the organization. Feel free to keep it simple, using the attached sample as a guide. Send your endorsement to Steve Gibbs, Sr. Manager, Hot Glass Bus/Technology Development, Corning Museum of Glass at [email protected], and he will incorporate it with others for submission by January 27, 2020. The more letters of endorsement submitted, the better the chances of receiving the endorsement from the United Nations for the 2022 designation.
