Habatat Galleries Hosting Third Annual Glass Weekend in Sarasota

  • Habatat Galleries of Royal Oak, Mich., and Longboat Key Center for the Arts, a division of Ringling College in Sarasota, Fla., are collaborating again to host the 3rd Annual Contemporary Glass Weekend in Sarasota
  • Beginning Jan. 26, leading artists from around the world will represent their countries in a spectacular four-day exhibitions of studio glass
  • The event includes exhibitions, auctions, studio tours, talks by artists, glass blowing demonstrations and private tours of museums featuring glass

Call for Applications: Emerging-Artists-In-Residence at PilchuckDue Tomorrow!

  • The Emerging-Artists-In-Residence Program at the Pilchuck Glass School supports artists who are making a transition in their professional lives
  • Whether moving from academia to a professional studio practice, taking up a new medium or beginning a new body of work, artists find this independent residency ideal for contemplation, research and experimentation
  • The program provides artists with a place and the time to develop an idea or project in glass, with the potential for realizing a new body of work
  • The residency period is Sept. 18 through Nov. 10, 2017
  • Applications are due Jan. 6 by midnight PDT

Congratulations to Jackie, Rebecca and Charky New!

  • Three students with local connections – Jackie Polofka, Rebecca Szparagowski and Charlyn Reynolds  – are participating in the 2016 International Student Online Exhibition organized by the Glass Art Society
  • Polofka, who was graduated from Bowling Green State University last month, received third place in the undergraduate category for her cast glass piece, The Perfect Slice
  • Szparagowski, a BGSU alum who is now a graduate student at Southern Illinois State University in Carbondale, received second place in the graduate category for her installation, Psyche
  • Reynolds, who worked at the TMA Glass Pavilion in recent years and is now a graduate student at the University of Texas Arlington, is represented in the exhibition by her work, Macaw-Crab
  • Also included in the exhibition is work by students at the Cleveland Institute of Art and The Ohio State University
  • This annual online exhibition provides students the opportunity to showcase their work to art professionals, enthusiasts and fellow students from around the globe
  • In fall 2016, GAS invited current full and part-time student members to submit images of their recent work for inclusion in the 2016 exhibition; all submissions are original, professionally crafted, contain glass as a main element and were designed or created between 2015-2016
  • Jurors for the online exhibition were Douglas Heller, Erica Rosenfeld and Ethan Stern

Loraine Ruetz Work in Korean ExhibitionNew Information!

  • As reported last week, Loraine Ruetz, adjunct instructor in glass and first year program Instructor at Bowling Green State University, ended the year on a high note by having work accepted in an exhibition in South Korea
  • Time and Space is at the CICA Museum, Feb. 17 through March 5
  • The exhibition features photographs, digital art and installation pieces by artists worldwide
  • Ruetz’ contribution is the photographs from her MFA exhibition at BGSU (not glass this time)

CMoG Online Demonstration Schedule for January AvailableNew!

  • No matter where you are in the world, you can watch as accomplished artists and instructors demonstrate for their classes at The Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass
  • In January, watch Jordana Korsen, Jeff Mack and Eric Meek, George Kennard, and Giles Bettison as they teach skills such as basic shapes like glasses and goblets, to techniques like mezza-filigranna and reticello, to how to handle large gathers of glass, and to using sheet glass to make murrine canes

Uroboros Finds New Home In New YearNew!

  • Just prior to the close of a year of discontent in the art glass industry, Eric Lovell, founder and president of Uroboros Glass, announced the sale of Uroboros Glass’ name, equipment, technology and formulas has been completed, and that the future of its many iconic products is now secured
  • All current Uroboros colors and product lines, from System 96 sheet and frit, and FX90 fusible products, to the traditional Art Glass multi-colored mottles, textures and contracted custom produced glass products are expected to be available again in the months ahead

  • With 25 years of experience in decorative glass tile design and manufacturing, the OGT owners and crew have a proven track record of developing and dependably supplying aesthetically superior, responsibly made colored glass products

Call to Artists: 4th Clay and Glass BiennialNew!

  • The City of Brea Art Gallery and the Association of Clay and Glass Artists of California have announced a call to artists for the 4th Clay and Glass Biennial
  • The national juried exhibition will be held at the Brea Art Gallery, Orange County, Calif., and will run July 22 through Sept. 15, 2017
  • The juror is Suzanne Isken, executive director of the Craft and Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles
  • This opportunity is open to artists 18 years and older who reside in the U.S.
  • $1,400 in prize money will be awarded
  • Artworks must be composed of at least 75 percent handcrafted glass, ceramics or a combination of the two; functional, sculptural and installation pieces are welcome
  • No artwork is to weigh more than 100 pounds, nor exceed more than 96 inches in any direction
  • Up to three artworks may be entered for $30, with an entry deadline of April 9

Call to Artists: Seattle Office of Arts & CultureNew!

  • The Seattle Office of Arts & Culture (ARTS), in partnership with Seattle Public Utilities (SPU), seeks to commission an artist or artist team to create a site integrated or site specific artwork that is reflective of Coast Salish historic and cultural connections to the Salmon Bay and Shilshole areas for SPU’s Ship Canal Water Quality Project (SCWQP) Pump Station
  • One artist or artist team will be selected to work with SPU staff, design team, the SPU Artist in Residence, stakeholders and ARTS to create original artwork within the Ship Canal Water Quality Project Pump Station project site
  • Artwork can be created as a free-standing element (or multiple elements) along the perimeter fence or landscaped areas, or can be integrated with the Pump Station building as a two- or three-dimensional artwork

Art Hours Changing to Glass Art Workshops at TMA

  • Beginning Jan. 18, the hands-on sessions in the TMA Glass Pavilion now known as Art Hours will be revised and marketed as Glass Art Workshops http://tinyurl.com/gsxhvcv
  • Open to Museum members and nonmembers alike, tickets are $30 for members and $40 for nonmembers (no refunds)
  • Projects in January and February are snowflake paperweights and hearts
  • A fun addition to the Glass Art Workshops line-up is the “Pick Your Project” option that lets you decide which glass object you’ll make during this hour-and-a-half- long session
  • A variety of options are eligible for Pick Your Project, including:

  • Pick Your Project workshops take place Thursday evenings and begin at 6:30 p.m.

GlassWeekend ’17 at WheatonArts, June 9-11

  • GlassWeekend is an international symposium and exhibition of contemporary glass that is held every other year

GAS to Receive $20,000 Grant from NEA

  • National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu has approved more than $30 million in grants as part of the NEA’s first major funding announcement for fiscal year 2017
  • Included in the announcement is an Art Works grant of $20,000 to the Glass Art Society for the public programs of the 2017 Glass Art Society Conference in Norfolk, Va. and the Glass Art Society Journal

Exhibition: The Craft School Experience

  • Five of the most historically important American craft schools have joined to celebrate the craft school experience and to broadcast this transformative experience to a nation of creators
  • The schools are Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Penland School of Crafts, Peters Valley School of Craft, and Pilchuck Glass School
  • The Craft in America Center will present an exhibition of objects demonstrating the creative vitality of individual artists impacted by these stimulating environments

Jutta Page to Discuss Glass Objects from Hearst Collection

  • In January in the GlasSalon, Jutta Page, senior curator of glass and decorative arts at the Toledo Museum of Art, will discuss nine objects formerly owned by William Randolph Hearst that are now part of TMA’s collection
  • The objects include an elaborate gilded-silver chalice, gilded-silver and rock crystal candlesticks, and a nautilus shell cup from 1596
  • The event – from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 13, will include the Toledo Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Grammy–nominated composer Michael Daugherty’s organ concerto “Once Upon a Castle”
  • A cash bar will serve several of the cocktails that Hearst once served at his famous castle parties in the 1920s and 30s, and small plates will be available for purchase
  • Composer Daugherty will discuss the research for his concerto

Fragile Fashion Exhibition at Glass Axis

  • A new gallery exhibition, Fragile Fashion, opens from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, at Glass Axis in Columbus, Ohio www.glassaxis.org
  • The exhibition will feature wearable glass art inspired by fashion throughout history
  • The majority of the pieces in this exhibition have been worn at previous glass fashion shows at Glass Axis and the Glass Art Society
  • Also included will be some of the designs artists will be creating for the next Glass Fashion Show at Glass Axis March 4
  • The exhibition will continue through March 25
