Area Glass Artists Selected for Maryland Exhibition – Reception Tomorrow!

  • Work by two area glass artists has been selected for the Hot Glass Exhibition in Cumberland, Md. – Matt Paskiet, owner of Firenation Glass Studio in Holland, Ohio, and Noel Welch, who graduated from the Bowling Green State University glass program in 2015, lives in Toledo and works in Bowling Green at the studio of Erwin Redl
  • The exhibition, in the Allegany Arts Council’s Saville Gallery, opened last Saturday and continues through Sept. 3; a public reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18

Artists Making Work for Second Hot Shots Event – Friday and Saturday!

  • Tomorrow and Saturday, Aug. 18 and 19, in a new version of last year’s inaugural Hot Shots event, eleven glass artists will create objects in one-hour increments at Firenation Glass Studio and Gallery in Holland, Ohio
  • The mission of the Arts Commission’s Hot Shots program is to engage and introduce different audiences to the world of glass art by working with local glass artists and experiencing Toledo’s history of glassmaking
  • This year’s collaboration is between local advertising/design agencies and glass artists, working together to create a glass piece that represents the designer or the advertising agency
  • The works will not be auctioned this year but will become the property of the participating design firms, which paid $1000 for one of their staff members to work with an artist to design an artwork representative of their firm
  • There will be a public exhibition and reception, date and time to be determined
  • This fall, the Arts Commission and Toledo Symphony will be hosting a Month of Glass and Music event that will celebrate our glass and music heritage
  • This year’s event is called Momentum and will incorporate music performances, glass art festival and art demonstrations, culminating in a three-day community event at Promenade Park where new public artwork will be unveiled and TSO will perform the music of Prince

Dog Days of Summer at Glass Axis Aug. 19 – Event Saturday!

  • Celebrate the Dog Days of Summer at Glass Axis in Columbus on Saturday, Aug. 19
  • Participants have the opportunity to cook their own lunch in front of our glassblowing furnaces
  • Hot dog roasting glassblower style is just $5 and includes your roasting of a hot dog and chips
  • No reservation required, just arrive around noon and start cooking
  • To commemorate the experience, you can also make a miniature glass hot dog; with the help of an artist, you will select your colors, then work with a staff artist to shape the hot dog and bun

  • Hawk Galleries in Columbus is featuring 16 artists from The Ohio State University glass program through Sunday, Aug. 20

Tyler Diesenberg Sculpture Selected for Pilchuck Auction – New!

  • A glass and metal sculpture by Tyler Diesenberg has been selected by a jury for the auction benefitting the Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Wash.
  • Diesenberg says he is excited about the opportunity to showcase his work
  • The Pilchuck Auction and Gala will be held Oct. 21 at Freemont Studios in Seattle

Matt Paskiet Teaching at Glass Axis in September – New!

  • Glass Axis is partnering with the Ohio Arts Council to bring Matt Paskiet to Columbus as their visiting artist and instructor this September
  • Paskiet will be teaching workshops using traditional Italian techniques he is fluent in
  • There will be three evening paperweight workshops, that require no previous glass experience, where participants will be treated to a demonstration of cane pulling, a studio tour and make a paperweight with the help of Paskiet
  • The three-hour paperweight classes will take place on Sept. 19, 20 and 21
  • Paskiet will also be offering a more advanced workshop to glassmakers interested in learning his Italian techniques over a four-day period, Sept. 25 -28
  • His work will also be on display in the Glass Axis Gallery

STARworks Glass Residency, Internship Deadline Sept. 30 – New!

  • STARworks Glass in Star, N.C., is accepting applications for its Resident Artist and Internship Programs in 2018
  • Three artist residencies are offered per year, each for a period of three months
  • Studio Internships are available each year for a period of three months each, which coincides with the Resident Artists program

Open Competition 2017 at U of M-Dearborn

  • At least one sculpture in glass is included in the Open Competition 2017 exhibition at the University of Michigan-Dearborn’s Alfred Berkowitz Gallery

  • You may recall the recent news that Amy Gilman, deputy director at the Toledo Museum of Art, has been named director of the Chazen Museum beginning Sept. 11
  • The Karen LaMonte exhibition at the Chazen Museum will include 12 large and nine small sculptures, including three from the Chazen collection

Steve Ciezki Returns to Neusole as Visiting Artist

  • Steve Ciezki (pronounced chet-skee, rhymes with Jet Ski), author and illustrator of the glassblowing book Life on the Rails: Intermediate Glassblowing Techniques and a former employee of Neusole Glass in Cincinnati, returns for a visiting artist demonstration and exhibition on Saturday, Sept. 9
  • The evening will begin with a live glassblowing demonstration at 6:30 p.m. and continues with a gallery reception until 8:30 p.m.

Bertil Vallien Exhibition at Schantz Galleries in Stockbridge, Mass.

Momentum Opening Reception, Awards Ceremony Sept. 16

  • An opening reception and awards ceremony will be held for Momentum, a juried exhibition and competition showcasing artworks from regional and national artists working in glass, glass related materials and materials referencing glass
  • The event will be from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Sept. 16, in the Secor Building, hosted by ProMedica, the Arts Commission and River House Arts
  • The competition will be held in multiple locations within the historic Secor Hotel including River House Arts; works will be judged by nationally recognized experts from within the glass and artistic communities and $10,000 in prizes will be awarded
  • The awards will be announced during the opening reception and the exhibition will be open to the public through Oct. 15
  • The opening is part of a free community celebration sponsored by the Arts Commission, Toledo Symphony Orchestra, presenting partner ProMedica, and the business and philanthropic communities

Call to Artists: Apply for Visiting Artist Residency at MOG

  • The Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Wash., is now accepting applications for the 2018 Visiting Artist Residency Program, which offers four artists the opportunity to experiment and create with glass
  • Selected artists will receive full use of MOG’s state-of-the-art hot shop and assistance its world-renowned team for an up to five-day residency in Tacoma
  • Applications are due by Dec. 1
  • Since its inception in 2002, MOG has welcomed 475 internationally-known and emerging artists from around the world who’ve brought a diverse and experimental perspective to the material

John Kiley Coming Soon for TMA Residency, Talk

  • GAPP artist John Kiley will discuss his work and participation in the Museum’s glass residency program at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug 25, in the GlasSalon
  • Kiley’s most recent work utilizes optic glass blocks that are fractured and then reconstructed
  • Fractography is the science of how and why brittle materials break
  • Kiley’s “Fractographs” are as unique as fingerprints, an indelible record of time, energy and place
  • During the re-construction process, strategic pieces are left out of the assembled blocks leaving it to the viewer to complete the piece in their imagination
  • “Historical sculptures often have missing elements that were broken off at some point in history,” Kiley said. “To me, missing elements evoke the passage of time – perhaps a moment of impact, an act of war or a slow degradation. My residency will be used to study pieces from the Museum’s collection that may not be intact, and create work based on the imagination of what is missing and why.”

FABER(ica) Exhibition at Owens Community College

  • A glass exhibition featuring works by Jess Brodersen, Fawn Denbow, and S. Jordan Fine will have an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at the Center for Fine and Performing Arts at Owens Community College
